Admins will never message you first

By Targa Praetorian ·

The short answer

If someone with an admin's name and photo writes to you privately after you asked a question in a group, treat it as a scam. A private chat shows no admin title, so a copy looks real. Compare the @username with the group's admin list, answer only in the group, and never send a code, a password or money.

Key facts

  • An admin's title is shown next to their messages inside the group. A private chat shows no title, so a real admin and a copy look the same there.
  • The private message usually arrives within minutes of a question posted in the group.
  • Telegram usernames can only contain a-z, 0-9 and underscores. A copied username differs by a digit, an underscore, a doubled letter or an added word.
  • Telegram's FAQ says login codes arrive in the chat named Telegram and should never be shared with anyone.
  • With two-step verification on, a new login needs the login code and your password. A scammer who has both has the account.
  • Telegram's FAQ names @notoscam as the account to contact about a scammer who pretends to be someone else.
